Animals are a part of our lives, and can touch us in loving and mysterious ways. They are friends, companions, and fellow inhabitants of Earth. Sometimes we feel the need to express our feelings for these creatures, and sometimes it comes in the form of a song.

“Old Tige” by Jim Reeves tells us the story of a loyal dog and his owner. Having returned home from his service in the army, Tige is there to greet him at the bus station. Like the other times the dog had always been there to help and guide him, Tige was able to lead him home safely. But upon speaking to his mother, the owner learned that Tige had actually died three years prior. It’s an emotional, heart-breaking song about friendship that can survive anything, even death.

In the case of “Old Shep,” created by Willis Arthur and Red Foley, we learn of a dog who has grown old and so sick not much can be done for him. The troubled owner can’t bring himself to shoot the dog and recalls all the wonderful memories they’d had together, such as wandering through meadows and hills.

With this, we can see that without animals, life would be a little less full.

The first sad song about whales which comes to the minds of those alive in the sixties, and their children, who were brainwashed and embarrassed by their parents choice of music, may remember Crosby, Stills and Nash singing the beautiful haunting ballad, “To the Last Whale.”

This pre-Animal Liberation Front age ballad gently chides, rather than storms any barricades, hoping to get the message out to the widest possible audience with their beautifully crafted music.

The song’s written from the position of those who were a little detached concerning the whale’s fate, saying, “It’s not that we don’t know, it’s just that we don’t want to care.” This attitude probably did more to radicalize the next generations rage against all machines that killed, and spawned Greenpeace, for example.

“ The Whaler’s Dues,” by Jethro Tull, from their Rock Island album gets far more into the nitty-gritty of the subject, examining what happens to a whaler’s family when he cannot put bread on their table.

There is no attempt to disguise the wrong done to the whales, here, but rather a plea for understanding and leaves listeners with a feeling that that both whalers and whales lose out to the money men in this interaction. The music is powerful rather than wistful, with Ian Anderson making good use of his silver flute’s mournful vioce.

This third song is bang up to date, from The Shaky Hands, called, “Whales Sing,” from the album,” The Skidmore Days.” An upbeat song, after a long intro featuring some very whale-like sounds, it’s only sad in its references to human relationships in terms of the sad story of the whales. The video clip for this song was shot at Hug Point near Arch Cape in Oregon, a prime whale watching tourist area now, but earlier, the home of Native American Indians who legitimately hunted whales for their families needs.

For the fans of sad songs opera is a real treasure. Such amount of depressive songs do not exists in any other genre of music. Primarily I think it is worth mentioning Puccini’s opera Tosca. Drama consists of three acts. Events are taking place in Rome in the early 19 th century. To be more precisely in 1800. Opera is staged on the play with the same name by Victor Sardou. Perhaps the saddest song in it is Aria “E lucevan le Stelle”. Besides Tosca, Puccini has a lot of sad operas. Madama Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, Turandot which was not not finished by the author, which died. Puccini has tendency to kill his prima donna’s in his operas. Another song that I want to mention is the finale of the opera Rigoletto in which the song is accompanied by a tragic denouement sinister at night. Rigoletto was written by Giuseppe Verdi.

Here’s my list of sad songs from operas:

E lucevan le Stelle from Tosca by Giacomo Puccini

Un Bel Dia from Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini

Che faro senza Euridice from Orpheus and Euridica by Gluck

The last scene from Aida by Verdi

Andrea Chenier by Umberto Giordano

The finale of Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi

Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti

Palmyra from Koanga by Delius

Lascia Ch’io Pianga and Cara Sposa from Rinaldo by Handel

Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica from Il Trittico by Giacomo Puccini
