For the fans of sad songs opera is a real treasure. Such amount of depressive songs do not exists in any other genre of music. Primarily I think it is worth mentioning Puccini’s opera Tosca. Drama consists of three acts. Events are taking place in Rome in the early 19 th century. To be more precisely in 1800. Opera is staged on the play with the same name by Victor Sardou. Perhaps the saddest song in it is Aria “E lucevan le Stelle”. Besides Tosca, Puccini has a lot of sad operas. Madama Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, Turandot which was not not finished by the author, which died. Puccini has tendency to kill his prima donna’s in his operas. Another song that I want to mention is the finale of the opera Rigoletto in which the song is accompanied by a tragic denouement sinister at night. Rigoletto was written by Giuseppe Verdi.

Here’s my list of sad songs from operas:

  1. E lucevan le Stelle from Tosca by Giacomo Puccini
  2. Un Bel Dia from Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini
  3. Che faro senza Euridice from Orpheus and Euridica by Gluck

  5. Andrea Chenier by Umberto Giordano
  6. The finale of Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi
  7. Lucia di Lammermoor by  Gaetano Donizetti
  8. Palmyra from Koanga by Delius
